Papaver Commutatum “Lady Bird”

This is one of my unmodest favourites. Really really nice against my Thujas or any other dark background. This year they became a bit on the small side….don’t know if it was due to draught or not enough feed or if the seeds went odd…(last years crop). I’ll do it agin though;-)

A problem with papaver?

Deers don’t eat papaver, they didn’t last year anyhow. I like that, because I like my papvers. Now there is this HARE in my garden at night. He LIKES ONE of my papaverspecies!!!! I have got two different kinds of Pap Rhoeas. Ladybird and some garish blende color hybrid. He(or she) does NOT eat the Ladybirds, but every single stem with buds of my about 20 plants of the other kind….Explain that….

I have wondered earlier if bumblebees might get some kind of kick of the pollen from papaver, because they seems almost aggressively eager to get it in comparision to other pollen… now the question arises: papaver is bitter to eat, very bitter, has the hare developed some kind of addictive taste for them?
